Abstract

The rapid development of wireless digital communication technology and the corresponding network software systems have created new horizons for communication beyond the Internet realizing the connected society. Among them, the field of mobile ad hoc networking is experiencing unprecedented growth in its scale and application diversity. Without requiring the preexistence of communication infrastructures, a temporary network can be established on demand and disappears when there is no need. The presence of a fixed supporting structure limits the adaptability of wireless systems. In other words, the technology cannot work effectively in places where there is no fixed infrastructure. Future generation wireless systems will require easy and quick deployment of wireless networks. This quick network deployment is not possible with the existing structure of current wireless systems. Recent advancements such as Bluetooth introduced a new type of wireless systems known as mobile ad-hoc networks. Mobile ad-hoc networks or "short live" networks operate in the absence of fixed infrastructure. They offer quick and easy network deployment in situations where it is not possible otherwise.

Abstract

We've all heard of Web 2.0, but what does it mean? I think of it as the Interactive Internet. It encourages collaboration between users and is driving the trend towards more interactive websites. The Internet as we have come to know it has been around for over ten years now. To date it has principally been used for searching, browsing and reading static information, which had been known as Web 1.0. Now it is evolving into something quite different, in fact something revolutionary. We are now in what is being coined the “Web 2.0 era”, where the Internet is now about interactivity. No longer do Internet users want to just look at and read a page. They want to interact, leave comments, upload music or photos and be involved in the Internet community.

Abstract

A checkpoint algorithm for mobile computing systems needs to handle many new issues like: mobility, low bandwidth of wireless channels, and lack of stable storage, disconnections, limited battery power and high failure rate of mobile hosts [MHs]. These issues make traditional checkpointing techniques unsuitable for checkpointing mobile computing systems. Minimum-process coordinated checkpointing is an attractive approach to introduce fault tolerance in mobile distributed systems transparently. The number of processes that take checkpoints is minimized to avoid awakening of MHs in doze mode of operation and to control the thrashing of MHs with checkpointing activity. It also saves limited battery life of MHs and low bandwidth of wireless channels. This approach is domino-free, requires at most two checkpoints of each process on stable storage; and in case of a fault, processes rollback to last consistent global state for recovery. But, it requires blocking of the underlying computation during checkpointing or taking some useless checkpoints. In this paper, we present a single phase non-blocking coordinated  checkpointing algorithm suitable for mobile computing environments. It produces a consistent set of checkpoints, without the overhead of taking temporary checkpoints; the algorithm makes sure that only minimum number of processes are required to take checkpoints in any execution of the checkpointing algorithm; it uses very few control messages and the participating processes are interrupted less number of times. Performance analysis shows that our proposed approach outperforms some existing important related works.

Abstract

The emergence of the Mobile Ad Hoc Networking (MANET) technology advocates self-organized wireless interconnection of communication devices that would either extend or operate in concert with the wired networking infrastructure or, possibly, evolve to autonomous networks. In either case, the proliferation of MANET-based applications depends on a multitude of factors, with trustworthiness being one of the primary challenges to be met. Despite the existence of well-known security mechanisms, additional vulnerabilities and features pertinent to this new networking paradigm might render such traditional solutions inapplicable. In particular, the absence of a central authorization facility in an open and distributed communication environment is a major challenge, especially due to the need for cooperative network operation. In MANET, any node may compromise the routing protocol functionality by disrupting the route discovery process. Unlike the wireline networks, the unique characteristics of MANETs pose a number of nontrivial challenges to security design, such as open peer-to-peer network architecture, shared wireless medium, stringent resource constraints, and highly dynamic network topology. These challenges clearly make a case for building multifence security solutions that achieve both broad protection and desirable network performance. In this paper we focus on the fundamental security challenges, discuss the challenges to security design, and review the state-of-the-art security proposals that protect the MANET link- and network- layer operations of delivering packets over the multihop wireless channel.

Abstract

Security of an information system is its very important property, especially today, when computers are interconnected via internet. Because no system can be absolutely secure, the timely and accurate detection of intrusions is necessary. For this purpose, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) were designed. There are two basic models of IDS: misuse IDS and anomaly IDS. Misuse systems detect intrusions by looking for activity that corresponds to the known signatures of intrusions or vulnerabilities. Anomaly systems detect intrusions by searching for an abnormal system activity. Most IDS commercial tools are misuse systems with rule-based expert system structure. However, these techniques are less successful when attack characteristics vary from built-in signatures. Artificial neural networks offer the potential to resolve these problems. As far as anomaly systems are concerned, it is very difficult to build them, because it is difficult to define the normal and abnormal behavior of a system. But for building anomaly system, neural networks can be used, because they can learn to discriminate the normal and abnormal behavior of a system from examples. Therefore, they offer a promising technique for building anomaly systems. This paper presents an overview of the applicability of neural networks in building intrusion systems and discusses advantages and drawbacks of neural network technology.

Abstract

Faults in software systems continue to be a major problem and many systems are delivered to users with excessive faults. This is been recognized that seeking out fault-prone parts of the system and targeting those parts for increased quality control and testing is an effective approach to fault reduction. Being able to estimate software faultiness before and during testing and analysis activities would greatly help software testing and analysis. Many systems are delivered to users with excessive faults. Prediction models based on software metrics, can estimate number of faults in software modules. In this paper different machine learning algorithms and neural network techniques on two different real-time software defect datasets are evaluated. The results show that when all the prediction techniques are evaluated then best algorithm for classification of the software components into faulty/fault-free systems is found to be Generalized Regression Neural Networks.

Abstract

In this paper, fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) and fractional Cosine Transform (FRCT) are used for image compression and are compared with conventional Fourier Transform (FT) and Cosine Transform (CT). It has been observed, that a good fidelity of decompressed image can be achieved by taking different fractional values of the transforms. FRFT provides better mean square error (MSE) and peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) for the same compression ratio (CR) as compared to FRCT while preserving image quality.

Abstract:

Meta-heuristics are renowned to present very efficient elucidation to many of today's combinatorial optimization problems in engineering, industrial, economical and scientific domains such as transportation, bioinformatics, logistics, business etc. Scheduling, timetabling, vehicle routing, resource allocation are intelligently and successfully tackled with Metaheuristic approaches such as Simulated Annealing, Tabu Search, Ant Colony Optimization, Harmony Search, Scatter Search, Iterated Local Search. Metaheuristics present itself as highly promising choice for nearly-optimal solutions in reasonable time where exact approaches are not applicable due to extremly large running times or other limitations. Meta-heuristic is a master strategy that guides and modifies other heuristics to produce solutions beyond those that are normally generated in a quest for local optimality. This paper highlights the various contemporary real life applications of Metaheuristics in the domain of industrial engineering and NP-hard problems.

Abstract

In spite of numerous advantages of biometrics-based personal authentication systems over traditional security systems based on token or knowledge, they are vulnerable to attacks that can decrease their security considerably. Reliable person identification is an important problem in diverse businesses. Biometrics, identification based on distinctive personal traits, has the potential to become an irreplaceable part of any identification system. While successful in some place, the biometrics technology has not yet delivered its promise of foolproof automatic identification. For these reasons biometrics is used in crime with proud to investigation. This paper specifically addresses the use of biometrics for Identification and Authentication (ID&A). In the context of this paper “biometrics” is defined as “the automated means of recognizing a living person through the measurement of distinguishing physiological or behavioral traits”. Choosing a biometric solution for a government application is often a daunting task. Faced with little reliable information about biometrics (vendors, products, and integrators), how do you go about making a sensible decision? The intent of this paper is to provide sound and practical advice for government managers trying to create a solid, biometric procurement proposal or operational requirement. The advice contained within this paper is intended to supplement, not replace, accepted project management best practices and methodologies.
